A few recent student mahjongs! 🔥

One of my favorite things about mahjong is that no matter where you go, you’ll find incredible people connected by the same game.

While on family vacation in Rosemary Beach, my sister-in-law and I snuck away before dinner to visit the new @30amahjongstudio and immediately wished we had more time. From the gorgeous wallpaper to the beautiful tile collections and 12 tables ready for play, every detail was so thoughtfully designed.

We loved chatting with Kim, the founder, about how mahjong has impacted her life in such a positive way. She graciously welcomed us on a day the studio was closed and let us browse the shop before heading back to our family.

We left inspired by the beautiful community she’s built—and slightly jealous of the local group known as the Mahj Wives. 😉Thank you for welcoming us in! Already planning our return trip- next time to play! 🀄️

Blanks are a hot topic in the mahjong world that people have very strong opinions about. 🔥 So let’s talk about it!

I’ve been playing mahjong since I was a kid and first heard about blanks in gameplay a couple of years ago. I called my grandma after hearing about it and could feel her eye roll through the phone. 🤣

What are blanks?
• They’re the blank tiles that come with your mahjong set, meant to replace lost tiles.
• As mahjong has gotten more popular, people have created all kinds of table rules for using them in gameplay, but blanks are not part of the official NMJL rules.
• The most common table rule for blanks is that you can use them to take any previously discarded tile and bring a dead tile back to life. 😱 But one of the problems with blanks is that there are no standard rules for them.

My take as a player:
• My personal preference is to play by NMJL rules without blanks! For me, part of the fun is the strategy and challenge of the game without them.
• But when I am invited to play with a group that prefers the table rule of playing with blanks, I play with them and have a great time (and probably go for a concealed hand!).

My take as a teacher:
• I teach the NMJL rules and do not teach with blanks.
• I feel strongly that it is important to learn the real NMJL rules of the game first.
• And then after that, I will encourage you to keep your blanks out, but if your group wants to decide on different table rules, I won’t lecture you on it.

American Mahjong is a fun, social game that helps kids build strategy, problem-solving, and math skills, all while learning patience and sportsmanship.

I learned to play mahjong as a little girl and many of my favorite memories are of playing mahjong with my family. I’d love to help your child fall in love with the game and give your family the chance to create some of the traditions that I cherished growing up.

In this 3-day mini camp, campers will learn the basics of American Mahjong through engaging instruction. We’ll take breaks, enjoy snacks, and keep things fun and interactive. Each camper will also receive a Lil’ Mahj card to keep. I’m a former elementary school teacher excited to make learning mahjong fun and easy!

It’s tile & mat washing day! 🫧 (x 6 sets)

Just a little glimpse into what goes into taking care of all of my mahjong materials and preparing for open play events and lessons. 🫶🏼

@themahjongline tile washing instructions:
• Spot clean with a damp microfiber cloth using cold water
• For a more thorough clean, rinse the tiles with cold water and gently dry them
• Do not use soap! Soap can damage the acrylic and inks.

My mat washing routine:
• Wash on cold
• Lay flat to dry (@themahjongline recommendation for drying)
• I personally have put them in the dryer for a few minutes to fully dry and have not had issues!
• I use a gentle stain remover spray when needed
