Frequently Asked Questions
American Mahjong is a tile-based game typically played with four players and 152 tiles, based on the traditional game of Chinese Mahjong. It’s social, strategic, and just the right mix of challenging and fun.
There are many variations of mahjong, and sometimes rules can differ depending on the group you’re playing with. I teach American Mahjong using the official National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules, so you’ll learn the authentic game and feel confident playing anywhere.
You may hear players mention “table rules” or “house rules,” which are player-agreed variations to standard gameplay. While these can be fun additions, I believe it’s important to learn the official rules first so you have a strong foundation before deciding if you want to incorporate any house rules later.
Not at all! Most students are complete beginners. My lessons are designed to be clear, approachable, and structured so you can learn step-by-step and feel confident as a learner.
Already have some experience? I also offer Mahjong 102 and 103 for players who are ready for more guided play, a deeper understanding of the rules and the deal, and an introduction to strategy and decision-making.

A group of 8 players is ideal and what I recommend so that everyone can learn with a partner.
Evening/weekend lessons: minimum of 6 players.
Weekday daytime lessons: minimum 4 players.
Lessons are about 2-2.5 hours long.
Guests should plan to arrive about 20-30 minutes before we start to socialize, get settled, etc. so we can start on time and maximize playing time.
I highly recommend taking at least two lessons if you really want to learn how to play the game. The first lesson focuses on learning the basics and gameplay, and the second helps build confidence, strategy, and flow.
No! You don’t need to purchase anything beforehand. I provide all the mahjong materials you need during the lesson.
If hosting a private lesson, all you need to provide is a table and chairs, plus any food and drink you want to provide.
